SNL, Thompson, Kenan

Kenan Thompson, shown here with Cecily Strong and Kyle Mooney, has said that “SNL” might end after Season 50.

Is SNL over after the 50th season?

Thompson, who plays Kenan in Kenan and Kel, is currently the SNL cast member who has been there the longest. He recently said that Season 50 might be “a good number to stop at.”

Thompson said these things on “Hell of a Week with Charlamagne” on Comedy Central. Thank God when the host, Charlamagne, told him that SNL might end after its 50th season.

The rumor comes from an interview SNL creator and executive producer Lorne Michaels did with CBS Morning’s Gayle King in 2021. Michaels, who is 77, said during the interview that he would stay on the show until its 50th anniversary. He said, “I’d like to see that through, and I think that would be a great time to leave.”

When Thompson talked to Charlamagne about these comments, he said: “Is that what people say? OK, I guess I should start making plans.

“That rumor could have a lot of truth to it, since 50 is a good number to stop at. It’s a really great deal.

Michaels has been in charge of SNL since it started in 1975, except for a five-year stretch from 1980 to 1985. He is also the boss of the late-night shows, The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and Late Night with Seth Meyers, which are both hosted by people who used to be on Saturday Night Live.

Thompson kept talking about how much Michaels meant to the show. He didn’t say that the show couldn’t go on without him, but he did say that Michaels’ departure would open up new possibilities, “a chance for a lot of nonsense to enter the game.”

Thompson said, “Michael is such a legend that he keeps those corporate wolves away.” Every week, they spend a lot of money on that show. It’s an expensive show, but it’s unique. “
