A Cloudflare Outage Broke Large Swathes Of the Internet

Cloudflare Outage Broke Large Swathes Of the Internet

The status page for Cloudflare says that it had an outage on Tuesday morning. Cloudflare’s technology is use on many other sites and services on the internet. According to Downdetector, the outage seemed to affect a wide range of sites, such as Discord, Shopify, Grindr, Fitbit, and Peleton. Around 2:30 AM ET, people started to say there were problems. Cloudflare said that the problem fixes at 4:06 AM ET.

People who used Cloudflare’s own DNS lookup service had the most trouble. Several people who worked for Verge and used Cloudflare’s DNS service couldn’t get to any websites at all during the outage. Luckily, this is easy to fix: just change how your DNS is set up. Most of my problems went away when I switched back to using my ISP’s default DNS settings.

Cloudflare has had problems like this before, like in July and August of 2020. It doesn’t look good for a company to say that its services will cut down on downtime.

Changed at 4:36 a.m. ET on June 21: Updated with confirmation from Cloudflare that the problems have been fixed.
